Interventional Radiology

In rural Alaska, we understand the advantages of having medical services close to home. The expense, inconvenience, and sometimes inability to travel outside the peninsula are some of the biggest reasons that Central Peninsula Hospital is proud to offer our community the services of a state-of-the-art Interventional Radiology Lab.

What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiology is a specialty of radiology where minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance (X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and Cath Lab). Some of these procedures are done only for diagnostic purposes (such as an angiogram), while others are done for treatment purposes (such as angioplasty and stenting). An interventional radiologist uses imaging to direct these procedures while using tubes called catheters, and other small instruments. The images provide “road maps” that allows the doctor to guide these instruments through the body to the diseased area.

Interventional Radiology can be used as a less invasive option for some surgeries, depending on the condition. In some cases, it can eliminate the need for hospitalization.

What Are Some Examples of Interventional Radiology (IR) Procedures

• Angiography
• Angioplasty
• Embolization
• Stent Placement
• Needle Biopsy
• Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filters
• Treatment of Clots
• Fistula Intervention

What to Expect After a Typical Interventional Radiology Procedure?

• You will enter a recovery area where your vitals (blood pressure, heartbeat etc) will be checked throughout your recovery.
• The recovery for an interventional radiology varies depending on the procedure. For a vascular procedure, you can expect to be in the hospital anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. For a non-vascular procedure, the expected time is typically 2 to 3 hours.

Before you leave the hospital, you will receive written instructions about what to do at home.
