Pre-Op Exercises
Many of the exercises you will be doing after surgery are the same ones you can do before surgery. The more familiar you are with them before surgery, the more successful you can be at them when you really need them during your recovery. Like most things in life, we would like you to perform these exercises in moderation before surgery. You might already be in enough pain that this could make it more painful or you might do too much and cause more of an injury or increased swelling. Just do them enough that you can be familiar and comfortable with them in the post-operative phase.
Inpatient Physical Therapy
Physical therapy alone may be sufficient to resolve your joint pain. However, if you and your orthopedic surgeon decide that surgery is the next necessary action, physical therapy will be a part of your treatment plan after your joint replacement surgery. Our certified team of physical therapists will coach you throughout your hospital stay after surgery. Once you are discharged home, your outpatient physical therapist will continue with your rehabilitation.
Outpatient Physical Therapy
There are many different outpatient therapy clinics available for you to go to. All of these locations are familiar with our joint replacement program and your surgeon’s protocol. Patients have a variety of reasons for choosing the location they go to for their post-op therapy. These reasons range from convivence of location to word-of-mouth referral or past experience. If you are unsure, you can always ask your surgeon for a recommendation.
Your surgeon might place the referral week prior to surgery or give you the referral when you are discharged from the hospital right after surgery. Which ever option it is, you can always call the physical therapy location you have chosen to let them know of your interest in their clinic for your post-op PT. Many locations will “pencil” you in for the first few sessions until they get your referral. We encourage you to call them ahead of time as they book up rather quickly.
