For the 3.3 million Americans who move into a nursing home each year, and for their families, the need for a move can be the beginning of an agonizing process: figuring out where to go. Everyone deserves a home that will take care of their health needs and treat them with kindness, respect and dignity. But only some nursing homes consistently deliver.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) developed a system to rate nursing homes’ performance in three important areas—health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care. Every nursing home in the U.S. is given a 1 to 5 Star rating of the care provided. About 10% of the nursing homes in the nation receive a 5 Star rating. Heritage Place was recognized this week with a 5 Star rating.

The CMS Star ratings are posted on the website, http://www.medicare.gov/NHCompare to assist with the selection of a nursing home, and are available for anyone to review when choosing a nursing home. While achieving a high rating is no guarantee a home is free of shortcomings or that it's ideal for a specific person, it can provide some peace of mind.

A crucial challenge, for many people, is finding a good nursing home that's close to home. Heritage Place is proud to achieve this recognition and be able to provide a good continuing care experience for the residents of the Kenai Peninsula as a part of the Central Peninsula Hospital healthcare team.
