Central Peninsula General Hospital has one of the most sophisticated
and technologically advanced Computed Axial Tomography units
available in any major medical center. Commonly called CT or CAT
scan, the unit uses special X-ray equipment to obtain image data. A
sophisticated computer system then processes the information, which
shows a cross section of body tissues and organs. The high speed CT
at CPGH creates 32 images per second, which both shortens the time
of the procedure and provides high quality images.
Having a CT exam is
quick and painless. The unit is doughnut shaped and generates
images from various angles while you lay flat on a table. During the
procedure, you will be asked to hold your breath for short periods
of time as the CT scanner rotates around you and the images are
taken.
Depending on the
type of exam, there may be a contrast material given orally,
rectally or by injection. Contrast material is necessary to
highlight organs in the body to allow the radiologist to see them
more clearly. CPGH uses a special contrast material that reduces
risk of adverse reaction. In some cases, you may also be instructed
to drink only clear liquids prior to the procedure. Patients with
questions are encouraged to call the department at 907-714-4420 and
discuss them with a technologist.
Staff
Four technologists, all of whom are registered by the American
Registry of Radiologic Technologists and have achieved advanced
certification in CT scanning, staff the department.
Hours of Operation
The CT department performs regularly scheduled Outpatient exams
Monday through Friday from 7:30am until 7:00pm. Staff is on-call
for urgent/emergency exams after hours.
Scheduling
All examinations can be ordered by the patient (with a physician’s
order) or by the physician’s office. When making your appointment,
you should be informed about whether or not any preparation is
